We're just happy to, shall we say, expose The Original Johnson.

That said, I didn't notice the coloring mistake rendering the stick transparent and suggestive in your second example. I'll make sure it gets fixed.

Your third example-- you skip over that in the very next panel, a black man punches the potential rapist in the mouth and throws him off the train.

I'm going to be very interested in how you react to Trevor's depiction of some of Johnson's later acts, including marrying white women at a time when that was illegal, and Johnson's prosecution under the White Slavery act of 1910.

Jack Johnson's life was a constant fight against the attitudes of the day, and he won most of them by knockout. Obscuring what happened along the way does him no justice.Glenn Haumanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15825568109767338845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32252561.post-81492417777417124582009-01-02T14:04:00.000-08:002009-01-02T14:04:00.000-08:00Greetings Mr. SynQThis is kermudgeon/aka Gus. I was so caught up in the explicit sexual images that i missed some of the more subtle things - like the title.

As you know the eighth area of people activity is my designated area of study. I think your keen observations are right on point. I've said that you simply cannot, will not have a discussion of White Supremacy without sex meandering into the conversation.

and sex is blatant in Mr. Von Eeden's work. I want to take a look at one of his other comics as well.

As I have further studied The Original Johnson, I have noted how sex is present not only in the images, but the language as well. Double entendres and bold face print of certain terms.

I have long considered lynching a sexual act. The double meaning of hung - to lynch; to have a large penis. The castrations that accompanied said act and the "offense" that warranted such brutality - he thought 'bout lookin' at a White woman he did!

Incidentally, the comic isn't really exaggerating the life and times of Mr. Johnson. This is the link for the PBS website for their documentary: http://www.pbs.org/unforgivableblackness/index.html
They lean heavily on the book - which has the same title as the film. White people did an extraordinary job - as usual.

I'm going to dig up some of the newspaper quotes on Mr. Johnson from back in the day. When I get them... I will share.

Keep up the good work.Gus T. Renegadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02353585038819270535noreply@blogger.com
